How voice AI works
A conversational system converts speech into text or another representation, interprets the request, selects a response, and produces speech. Some systems combine these stages. Background noise, accents, interruptions, and unfamiliar names can affect accuracy.
In collections, approved workflows may explain a verified balance, capture a payment promise, or route a billing question. A conversation does not itself authorize a payment or change an account's legal status.
Controls for collection conversations
Use verified account facts, appropriate identity checks before sensitive disclosures, approved options, and a clear path to a person. Define handling for disputes, wrong numbers, hardship, and uncertain responses. Do not infer affordability or consent from tone alone.
Recording, transcription, outreach, and data retention each require appropriate controls. AI does not guarantee legal compliance or customer satisfaction.
Calling rules still apply
The FCC has determined that AI-generated voices fall within the TCPA's artificial-voice provisions. Applicable consent requirements, exemptions, and other calling restrictions must be assessed for the particular use.
